Mrs. Christina Durvis
Welcome! I have been teaching in Cajon Valley for 25 years, the last 8 happily here at Fuerte where I hope to stay until I retire. I earned my BA, credential, and master’s degree in curriculum and instruction all from SDSU. I love to travel, am a dedicated yogi, an avid reader, and am happiest when in the water, whether it is the ocean or a pool. I will be here every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and the wonderful Mrs. Peterson will be here each Wednesday.
It's a great honor to inspire students to see the wonders of math. Math is a beautiful art form, and solving challenging problems can be deeply rewarding. Math is intimidating for some students, but with the right environment, tools, and attitude, even the most reluctant student can develop the love of math. It is my goal that your child feels both challenged and safe to take risks each day in class. This year we are using Go Math! as our math adoption. This high-level, challenging program has a lot to offer, particularly online. Students have access to the curriculum online so in the event of an absence, or more assistance is needed for homework completion, lessons can be revisited on thinkcentral.com.
When it comes to homework, it should NEVER take more that 10-15 minutes. If this is happening, please let me know and we will problem solve. Students take notes everyday in class, and you can refer them to their notes when experiencing confusion so that they can develop independence. The homework will always directly correlate with the lesson of the day, so you can let your fifth grader explain the concepts or skills to you.
The majority of writing (99% of the time) will be completed in class. We will be covering narrative, informational, and argument, and a great deal of writing will be done on chrome books. If you are ever curious about the writing that is happening, feel free to come by after school to take a peek.
5th graders will go through 3 rotations each morning: math, reading, and science. We will end our day with an hour writing block in homeroom followed by social studies and P.E. As you can see, we keep our 5th graders busy.
If ever you have any questions or concerns please send an email and I promise to reply promptly. My email is email@example.com.
Thank you so much and here's to a wonderful year!
