Redistricting 2021

Redistricting is the process by which a school district ensures population balance of each the Board  of Education trustee areas. It is designed for Board of Education trustee elections.

How and where districts are drawn can shape communities’ ability to elect the representatives of  their choice. Board of Education Trustee areas must be made as equal in population as practicable  so that communities have equal access to political representation.

After every census, school districts are required to review population data to determine if the voting  seats are still within the allowable variance and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that the  trustee areas have a balance in population.

August 31: Board Meeting: Redistricting Overview 

Sept/Oct: Receipt of 2020 Census data and evaluation of population within each voting area of the Board of Education. 

October 26: Board Meeting: Presentation of new Census data; Public Hearing; Board Discussion of Potential Maps 

November 16: Board Meeting: Board approval of Map

• Karen Clark-Mejia- CVUSD Trustee District 4 

• Jim Miller- CVUSD Trustee District 5

No. This Redistricting process will not adjust school attendance boundaries. Redistricting only  effects the Board of Education Trustee areas for voters to have equal representation.

CVUSD is planning a series of engagement. First the Board of Education and public will learn about Redistricting at the August 31st Board of Education Meeting. Following this initial presentation, the following is planned:

A Community of Interest is an important factor for redistricting. A Community of Interest is a  neighborhood, community, or group of people who have common policy concerns and would benefit from being maintained in a single district. Another way of understanding a community of interest is  that it is simply a way for a community to tell its own story about what neighbors share in common, and what makes it unique when compared to surrounding communities.

Keeping communities of interest together is an important principle in redistricting. Community members can define their communities by telling their own stories and describe their concerns to policy makers.

Such groups include (but are not limited to) groups with cultural or historical bonds, shared racial, ethnic or religious identities, neighborhoods, or a shared vision of the future of a community.

One of the most important actions for the Redistricting process is for the community to express their views. Please attend the 11/16/2021 Board Meeting to learn more and voice your opinion.
